Employee Security & Awareness
Programs
| Delivery of an effective asset protection program
depends significantly upon how well that agenda is woven into the overall philosophy and
mission of the organization. Instinctively, corporate cultures deflect this responsibility
by assuming that it is not part of their role. When asked what security is, they respond
typically by identifying things or other agencies (e.g. alarms, closed circuit television,
law enforcement, or security officers, etc.); not themselves as part of this process.
Security management gained the unenviable reputation of being a cost center. Senior
executives found it easier to invest in systems and man-hours (guards) rather than find
and weave professional security management into their overall mission. It is critical that
asset protection not be typified by these perceptions. Asset protection is just one more
business objective that is best achieved and sustained by managers who are enlightened to
security issues and willing to include them in their day-to-day itinerary. Organizations
that have succeeded in overcoming this misconception have had measurable success in
protecting critical assets. Asset protection must therefore evolve from employee focus
groups, be an integral part of new employee orientation, and included with in-service
staff training, professional development, and performance evaluations. |
