| Business appears to be increasingly more sensitive to the issue of computer security. In most organizations, Information Security Specialists work within their data processing departments to ensure the integrity of their software and hardware. In spite of this effort, a significant weakness persists. The corporate culture does not understand or support these concerns and continues to place critical data and other assets at risk. The same is not true of communications security. Digital communications, facsimile and cellular technology, and now the Internet have all helped to exacerbate a security problem that never was appropriately managed. With both computer and communications security, one of the other potential shortcomings is senior management's lack of knowledge or experience with the technology relied upon to manage the problem. Senior executives must be cautious in investing too much faith in their communications and data processing departments. Periodic independent assessments and employee awareness programs would do much to alleviate these potential vulnerabilities. |
